Archive for 2010

For many desperate fangirls and angry fanboys, 2010 will be forever remembered as the year when Jonghyun (member from boy band SHINee) and Shin Se Kyung (actress/model) revealed that they were seeing each other.

Jonghyun (20)

Shin Se Kyung (20)

While this doesn't seem too shocking or even shocking at all, considering they're part of the entertainment industry, you must understand that the 'idol world', in this case Jonghyun's world, has rarely allowed open relationships such as this one. And there are many reasons for that.

First of all, the training. It's oddly common nowadays to see idols fainting while on stage due to excessive stress and lack of sleep. In that situation, how would they be able to maintain a healthy relationship? In addition to that, the fans. Yes, the fans. The agencies know that many fans would stop supporting the groups if their bias (they're favorite member) started to date someone that was not them. Crazy, I know, but it's true. I'll get to that point in this post when it's more relevant.

Therefore, it's really intriguing to watch the development of this case since it reveals much about the actual influence of the idols inside the labels or over society. Even if it's just an opinion, I'd like to share an interesting point of view on this matter with you.

The first picture(s)

Old rumors already talked about SHINee's influence inside SM Entertainment. It's hard to believe that a fairly new group would have such power over one of the biggest companies of South Korea. But would SM let any artist from any other active group openly date like they did with Jonghyun? Not only that, but would they also protect him/her like they did this time? I don't think so. Well, you might say that SNSD is much more powerful. I reckon you're right, but in my view, the company wouldn't take the risk when the girls are having their golden years. Remember, SHINee has a lot of fangirls, but SNSD has the SONEs, gathering boys and girls, and I wouldn't like to mess with them.

Concerning Shin Se Kyung, she is probably the biggest victim in all this, despite her being able to date an incredibly famous boy band member. After all, it didn't take a day until multiple hating-sites had been opened by her new anti-fans. Her personal accounts also had to be close. Still, we can't deny that in the end it all helped boosting her popularity. Give her all the CMs already lol!

If I had to give a surprise prize for anyone, it would definitely be to the members of the SHINee official fanclub, the Shawols. While their first reactions were mixed and fights happened on many internet forums, it didn't take long for them to realize what they had to do. Nothing could be more important as members of the official fanclub than to support Jonghyun no matter what. And I'm glad they took that seriously, even if I was really mad at Jonghyun's apologize at a music show. I mean, why is he saying sorry to the fans and not the opposite? But then I noticed that it was only a matter of politeness and it's just the Korean way of life (in the most positive way).

Peace at last!

After following all news about it, it seems that things are calmer now. Despite all the deep analysis I made, I just hope that they can see each other whenever they want without anyone annoying them. Even with all the hard training and busy schedules, maybe this was a huge step in the right direction. Maybe one day more idols can share happy moments with the person they love, right?

For Jonghyun, just don't let all that happiness affect you're training and talent, because I'm sure fans will notice it. Oh, I think that wasn't very supportive...sorry lol. But really, just take care of yourself and your girlfriend! For Shin Se Kyung, since you don't have to slave-train, how about making a TV commercial with your boyfriend? That would be the final strike on the remaining crazy fans!

Now for you, reader, I hope it was at least an interesting reading. If you have anything to add or to argue, just take your time and make a (huge) comment below. The 'Uncovering' corner will be back next week with more huge texts~ ^^

After some requests and to celebrate the last day of the year, I decided to create a new type of post in order to make this blog more entertaining. And what would be better than to discuss about the most shocking news of the Japanese or Korean media? Since it requires bigger analysis and patience, I'm thinking about writing this as a weekly corner while I continue my daily exploration of the J/K-Artists' world. Prepare your arguments for the comments and expect harsh critics! *runs from fangirls*

The 'Uncovering' corner is now open! ^^

    Happy New Year~ :3

(the blog will be updated with the first post today only if I manage to complete it before New Year's celebrations =.=)

On my quest to fill this blog with boy groups, I decided to write about this mix of members from famous Korean boy bands: SM The Ballad.

Jay, Jonghyun, Jino and Kyuhyun

As the name suggests, this group is composed of members from SM Entertainment: Kyuhyun (from Super Junior), Jonghyun (from SHINee), Jay (TRAX) and a new singer, Jino (trainee). Formed in 2010, it is a project to bring back the ballad songs that dominated the K-Pop scene some years ago and to showcase the label's best vocals.

To achieve those goals, the chosen members were the ones considered the best singers in their respective groups. In November 2010, SM The Ballad released the first album 'Miss You' and started promoting the title track.

'Miss You''s Music Video - powerful vocals

Despite the group's incredible vocal capacities, the album sold less than expected. It seems that the industry got a little resistant against pure ballads after the recent idol and auto-tune boom. Still, SM continued the project and started promotions for the album's most famous track, 'Hot Times'.

'Hot Times''s Music Video - REALLY powerful vocals lol

With great live performances and fans from different bases supporting the group, SM The Ballad reached the first place on sales rankings and showed that talent still matters despite all the average groups getting successful.

1st place makes people happy!

For 2011 we can only wait and see if SM will bring the group back for a second album. With DBSK coming back in January, then probably f(x) and Super Junior, the boys will have little time to sing together again. But don't worry, it's just a matter of time! Small post is small but what can I do, they don't even have two months since their creation...

YEEEEA-AH-YEEEE-AH-YEEEE-YE-YE-YEAH~ Hot Times are here lol

Since I promised that this post would be about a male group, have fun reading about this great visual kei band, Matenrou Opera.

You (bass), Yuu (drums), Sono (vocals), Ayame (keyboard) and Anzi (guitar)
Matenrou Opera was formed in 2007 by the vocalist Sono and the drummer Yuu. 'Alkaloid Showcase', their first maxi-single, was released during one of their concerts. All copies were quickly sold. Despite the underground success, members Karen and Mika (keyboardist and guitarist) left the band in late 2007. They were replaced by Ayame and Anzi.
The band had another great year in 2008, signing with indies label Sherow Artist Society, releasing good singles and participating with rising band Versailles in their european tour. The next year was marked with the release of the 'Anomie' album, which was praised by J-rock fans and attracted more listeners.

'Anomie''s Promotional Video
After the album, Matenrou released two more singles, one live-distributed only called 'Eternal Symphony' and one regular single, 'Murder Scope'. Following many successful songs, the band had a quiet first semester in 2010, focusing in concerts. Still, they released 'R/Genesis' in May 2010, their 10th single.
'Murder Scope''s concept
During the final concert of the tour, Matenrou Opera announced that they had signed with a major label, King Records. The major debut album 'Abyss' was released on December 22nd. Fans loved the new songs and were glad that the change of labels didn't change the band's music. 'Abyss' is epic.
'Coal tar', from the 'Abyss' major album
Matenrou surely has a bright future ahead. Their technical and creative qualities really outstand in the visual kei scene and I can't wait for the 2011 releases! Hopefully this band will continue to rock for a long time, even with the wave of disbandment that is currently attacking J-rockers.
Be epic, listen to this band. ^^

*looks at past posts* Omg, there isn't a single boy band in all those posts...Sorry! I promise that my next post will be about a male group. But now it's T-ara time!

Six-member T-ara - the way it began

With their official debut in June 2009 with six members (the original idea had five), T-ara was the first girl group created by Core Contents Media. The first single 'Lies' didn't impress the critics as most live performances of it were actually lipsynched. The girls then promised that the next performances would be live.

Keeping their promise, T-ara released the first album 'Absolute First Album' on December 2009 and worked hard to promote it well. The song 'Bo Peep Bo Peep', the first promoted from the album, won four awards on music shows, establishing the group as a strong girl band. The second song 'Like the First Time' also achieved good rankings.

'Like the First Time''s Music Video - successful T-ara!

Following up their hit songs, the group announced in February 2010 that they would comeback with the repackaged version of their debut album, this time called 'Breaking Heart'. The music video for the title track 'I Go Crazy Because of You' was released and promotions began.

'I Go Crazy Because of You''s concept

After ending their first album's live performances, T-ara started preparing their next comeback. It was only in November 2010 with the release of 'Why Are You Being Like This' that the girls returned to the spotlight. But fans were surprised with the presence of a new member, Ryu Hwayoung. The group was now officially composed of 7 girls.

'Why Are You Being Like This''s Music Video

One more surprise was kept from the public: 'Why Are You Being Like This' was not the title track for their second album. In December, Core Contents Media released another music video, this time for the real lead track 'YaYaYa'.

'YaYaYa''s Music Video

'YaYaYa' pleased many fans, but also disappointed with the repetitive lyrics and native-american concept, which was considered racist and plain by some viewers. Despite the fights among fans to decide which track was better, the released songs were promoted together and the comeback earned T-ara more awards.

With promotions coming to an end, I'm glad to see that these girls earned awards even with some problems concerning their outfits on stage or their song's concept. You can't blame them for what their agency chooses, the group is just doing their work. And they're doing it well. I can't wait for the next comeback in 2011!

    T-ara Hwaiting~ ^^

Hello! I'm officially back from Christmas and ready to post more about my favorite artists. This time, I'll present an artist with a beautiful and unique voice that is really underrated: Ayaka Hirahara.

Ayaka Hirahara in the booklet of her single 'Keropak'

Ayaka started her career in 2003 with the release of the single 'Jupiter'. This single brought the style that would mark her career: the adaptation of classical music to new songs sung by her. In 2004, 'Jupiter' was one of the best-selling singles in Japan.

Following the release of her first single, Ayaka had a 2004 full of releases, starting with the second single 'Ashita', which was used as the main theme for the 'Yasashi Jikan' drama, and ending with the released of two successful albums.

Live performance of 'Ashita' - Such a beautiful song!

Despite the popular debut, Ayaka's singles sold less and less during the following years. Still, she kept releasing three or two single every year, proving that her superb vocal talent was enough to maintain her in the industry.

It was only in 2008 that the singer achieved another hit with the release of 'Nocturne/Campanula no Koi'. The song peaked at 6th in the sales ranking and ended up selling more than a hundred thousand copies.

'Nocturne/Campanula no Koi''s cover

In 2009, Ayaka released her first 'My Classics!' album, containing many rearrangements of famous classical compositions. After a quiet year, Ayaka began 2010 with a surprising duet with Norimasa Fujisawa called 'Sailing my Life', used as the theme for DisneyNature's film 'Oceans'.

'Sailing my Life''s Music Video - Two awesome singers together!

The singer then released 'My Classics! 2' with new songs and a special treat for fans: the japanese version of 'Love Never Dies', theme of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical 'Love Never Dies', a sequel to the famous 'Phantom of the Opera'. Ayaka was personally asked by Andrew to sing the song after he watched her live performance in a japanese music show.

Ayaka and Andrew together at the 'Love Never Dies''s premier

Closing the year of 2010, Ayaka produced another single, called 'Greensleeves'. The sequel to 'My Classics! 2' is scheduled to March 2011 and before that another single is expected.

 'Greensleeves''s Music Video

Ayaka Hirahara is a true singer with great influences and excellent compositive abilities. It's sad to see that her singles aren't selling as well as they used to. At least I'm glad to know that she won't stop singing just because of that. Nowadays she seems to be like a hidden gem. Hopefully she can get the recognition she deserves in the next years!

Now go and listen to her awesomeness! ^^

Hello dear readers~ It's that time of the year when everything turns red and green (like this post),and we celebrate Christmas with our families. If you're someone like me that even in this day can't stay away from the computer, I'm glad to give you this post as a present!

Idols celebrate Christmas too!

And what could be a better way to feel this day's spirit than with music? Of course, I'll fill this post only with korean and japanese songs, but feel free to listen to whatever you want today, although I think you should keep reading and listen to the selected songs! ^-^
    Let's start with our X-mas style K-Artists!

Fall in love this Chritsmas with JYP Nation's 'This Christmas'

It's 'Love Love Love' with After School's girls!

X-Mas with SHINee!

These songs are great aren't they? It really makes your day a little more special. But now it's time for some J-Christmas!

A cute Christmas with moumoon's 'my Secret Santa'

'Ano Hi no Merry Christmas' by Arashi!

Celebrate with C-ute's 'Aitai Lonely Christmas'

Unfortunately, I don't have much time to write this post, but I hope it was a fun listening! I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, full of great moments and hopefully with lots of catchy songs too. But don't worry, I'll probably post a new artist tomorrow. After all, Christmas isn't really as long as all the presents and preparations make it seems.

DBSK wishes you a Merry X-mas too!

Want to share your favorite snowy songs too? Just make a comment and I'll be sure to check them out~

I had the idea to write about this cute trio as soon as I listened to one of their songs today!

Lizzy, Nana and Raina

A sub-unit of veteran girl band After School, Orange Caramel is the definition of cutesy. Debuting in June 2010 with their first mini-album 'Magic Girl', the trio was able to get in the spotlight by showing their singing abilities combined with bubbly songs and colorful costumes.

'Magic Girl''s Music Video - step aside, non-cute artists!

While the song dominated the sales charts (and all the idol world, with many parodies of the dance being performed on variety shows), the concept disappointed some After School fans. Still, Orange Caramel continued to spread the cuteness with the song's promotion.

With such success, the group didn't take long to comeback. In September 2010, the girls released their second mini-album called 'A~ing♡'. Now with a fairytale concept, the song turned to be another hit despite some people saying that it was too similar to 'Magic Girl'. They surely didn't hear it enough.

'A~ing♡''s Music Video - I LOVE THIS SONG.

During the promotions of the new title track, the trio was able to win some weekly music awards. Their songs were also ranked as the most played at korean karaokes, which demonstrates the power of cutesy. Fans can be sure to expect more adorable lyrics and bright costumes in 2011, even with After School's comeback planned.

Backstage cuteness

I can't stop listening to their songs! I hope this post was cute enough to represent their almighty cuteness and that I said 'cute' as many times as possible to properly convey my message full of cutesy. I know it was a short trip into the world of fluffy bunnies and marshmallows, but there isn't really a lot to say about a group that started this year...sorry!

Can I have some cookies now? :3

(By the way, you can also watch their Dance Version of 'A~ing♡''s music video on Youtube and learn the choreography to help spread the cuteness!)

While searching for the japanese artist for my new post, I found out that most of my planned artists have their music videos and songs removed almost daily by their labels (most of them are from Sony Records...). Anyway, I shall do what I can to complete my huge list of japanese artists, starting with this unique singer and cellist.

Kanon and her cello

Kanon Wakeshima started to learn to play the cello at the age of 3. Later, she played the instrument at school with other musicians. Showing her talents, she also started to compose and sing during high school.

Following her dream of becoming a professional artist, Kanon auditioned at Sony Music Entertainment as a singer (she didn't want to include her cello playing in the tape). After a few tries performing with the piano, she changed her mind and decided to audition with the cello. She ended up getting a contract and debuted in May 2008 with her single 'still doll', presenting a dark atmosphere with gothic lolita visuals.

Booklet from the single 'still doll'

The single was highly expected as it was produced by famous gothic composer and ex-Malice Mizer's member Mana. The song 'still doll' was also chosen as the ending theme for popular anime 'Vampire Knight'. This first success was enough to give her the opportunity to once again sing for the ending theme of 'Vampire Knight', this time in the second season. The single 'Suna no Oshiro', released in November 2008, showed an even darker side of the artist and Kanon did it spectacularly.

 'Suna no Oshiro''s Music Video

After the release of her second single, Kanon started producing her first album 'Shinshoku Dolce', which was released in 2009. The album showed more of the cellist's dark side. In search of new admirers, the album was also promoted in Europe, even having an official release there.

Fans spent almost the whole year waiting for another song, but 2009 ended without news of a future release. It was only in July 2010 that Kanon announced the release of her second full album 'Shoujo Jikake no Libretto'. It was a great surprise for not being just a single. The title track 'Lolitawork Libretto' featured french singer solita as story-teller.

'Lolitawork Libretto ~Storytelling by solita~'s Music Video

This time, with the second album, the girl showed a cuter side of her singing, with most of the songs being composed by Kanon herself, with only a few being composed by Mana. The cutesy, while angering some listeners, pleased the fans that expected her return.

In November 2010 the artist made a surprising revelation: she would make a duet with An cafe's bassist Kanon. The group, called 'kanonxkanon', released 'Calendula Requiem' as the opening theme for a new anime, 'Shiki'.

kanonxkanon

Kanon's singing blended with her cello playing certainly makes a wonderful combination. I just hope it won't take another year until she releases new stuff. I  think 'Suna no Oshiro' is my favorite song, although her second album really catches my attention, especially the cute cat-singing in 'Kuroneko to Pianist no Tango'.

Gothic side over cute side? Cat-singing over creepy whispers? You tell me! ^^

It took me a while to decide on my next korean artist, IU. I just recently discovered this 17 year-old super talented girl  with the release of her third mini-album 'Real', which will be discussed later on. Because of that, I had to do a little research on her career to write this post. And it was really interesting! Check it out below. ^^

Cover from her newest mini-album 'Real'

Debuting in 2008, IU, with only 15 years, released her mini-album 'Lost and Found'. The title track 'Missing Child', also known as 'MIA', impressed critics with the girl's powerful vocals. Unfortunately, the mini-album wasn't a commercial success.

In 2009, IU made her comeback with a new style. Showing a very cute side of her personality, she was able to conquer the fan's hearts with the title track 'Boo' from her first album 'Growing Up'.

'Marshmallow''s Music Video - one of the cute songs in 'Growing Up'

After the successful release of her first album, IU started to appear in variety shows, which made her more popular among kpop fans. Her acoustic covers of hits like Super Junior's 'Sorry Sorry' or SNSD's 'Gee' surprised the audiences for their quality. In 2010, she did a duet with 2AM's member Seulong. The song, 'Nagging', ended up giving the young artist her first music award.

IU and Seulong - A cute and successful duet.

In December 2010, IU announced the release of her third mini-album, called 'Real'. The album had been produced by many famous composers and the expectations for the songs were really high. When released, the charts revealed incredible sales as the artist topped every single ranking. On the following week, fans were amazed with the title track 'Good Day''s live performances where IU showed her wide vocal range. As expected, she won her first solo award.

Good Day's Music Video - flawlessly perfomed on music shows

IU is already an awesome singer even if she's so young yet!. I can't wait to hear more from her and I recommend her mini-album 'Real' since all songs are spectacular. She knows what she wants and I'm sure she has a brilliant future ahead! And she's really pretty too~ ^^

This time I'll talk about a very special trio of incredibly talented singers: Kalafina.

Wakana, Keiko and Hikaru - From the album 'Seventh Heaven'

Produced by famous japanese composer Yuki Kajiura, Kalafina started as group of two singers, Wakana and Keiko (from the composer's FictionJunction project), that would sing the themes for the seven movies of Type-Moon's anime series Kara no Kyoukai, released on japanese theaters.

After releasing their first single 'oblivious' in the beginning of 2008, the girls were praised for their beautiful vocals and harmonization. In May 2008, Yuki Kajiura held an audition to choose two more members for Kalafina. The selected ones were Hikaru and Maya. Right after the auditions, the group released their second single 'sprinter/ARIA', in which both new members appeared in the music video.

'sprinter''s Music Video - still one of the fans' favorite songs

Continuing the releases of the movie's themes, Kalafina released another single in 2008, called 'fairytale'. But fans were surprised as Maya's vocals weren't heard in the song and she wasn't shown on the music video. Hoping for her return, fans continued to support the group normally, until their next single 'Lacrimosa' was released (in the same day as their first album 'Seventh Heaven'), when Sony made a post on their site confirming that Maya would no longer participate in Kalafina's activites.

'Lacrimosa''s Music Video - Kalafina without Maya

Despite Maya's departure, the group had a successful year, releasing two more singles, now for different animes or TV shows, as their first album contained the last of the Kara no Kyoukai's themes. In 2010, the girls released their second album, 'Red Moon'. Presenting a darker atmosphere and experimental sounds, the album impressed fans with its superior quality.

'Red Moon''s cover (I really wanted to post a song from it but Sony's been removing the yt videos related to it...)

After the album's release, Kalafina held a tour to promote it. Fans weren't disappointed as the girls proved their spectacular vocals in a wonderful performance. Their next single, 'Kagayaku Sora no Shijima ni Wa' was only released half a year later, in September 2010. In December, Kalafina released their first Live DVD from the Red Moon tour.

Kagayaku Sora no Shijima ni Wa (once again, Sony's removed the music video x.x)

For 2011, Kalafina has announced a single release in February called 'Magia'.

These girls don't fail to impress me! I love this group to bits and I hope you can enjoy it too! I really recommend the album 'Red Moon' and their DVD. If you like it, please remember to support the group! Aren't these girls awesome? *0*

To start my posts on korean artists, I chose my favorite girl group: f(x).

Victoria, Amber, Sulli, Krystal and Luna

Formed in 2009 under S.M. Entertainment, f(x) is a 5-member group. Also known as the female 'Dance Group' of S.M., the label sisters of boy band SHINee debuted with the song 'La cha ta'. f(x) then gathered attention with the member's good-looks, especially the tomboy-ish member Amber, the rapper.

La Cha Ta's Music Video

Despite the catchy song and attractive members, f(x) did not win any award for 'La Cha Ta'. The same happened with their first official single 'Chu' (the debut song was released only as a digital single), although both songs helped to increase the group's popularity among korean and international fans.

The burst of popularity came in May, 2010 with the release of the first mini-album, "NU ABO". The catchy lyrics, change of style, attitude and an incredible dance choreography impressed the fans. Unfortunately, the competition with veteran boy band 2PM ended up in losing the awards once again. Still, the mini-album was important as it put the girls in the spotlight.

NU ABO's Music Video - A new f(x) was presented to the public

What the fans didn't expect though was the ankle injury Amber suffered during 'NU ABO''s promotion. After spending some time promoting the song with Amber sitting on a chair, the group's agency decided she should get some rest for better recovery. Then, f(x) finished their promotions without Amber on the stage. Follow-up promotions with the song 'Mr. Boogie' were made only with the other four girls.

 2011 Calendar -- Amber-less f(x)

Time passed and Amber didn't come back. S.M. says she's still recovering, now in the US. While people search for information on her disappearance, Victoria, Krystal, Sulli and Luna gain popularity on variety and music shows. Is this a way of focusing the fans' attention on the other girls? Is S.M.Entertainment hyping the group's comeback by hiding Amber? I don't know, but it's certainly interesting to watch the development of this excellent group. I'm really excited for their 2011 comeback and I hope they'll win many awards next time, because they deserve it!

    What's your opinion? ^^

I thought it would be fair to start this blog with my favorite japanese group: ALI PROJECT.

 Arika Takarano (vocals)

Well, ALI PROJECT has a big history in the japanese music scene as they started in 1988. You can read more about their career on their Wikipedia article.

If you are a jpop fan, you may know them. AND you may 'hate' them. I know a lot of people do. Why is that? I would say it's because they're different, unique. ALI PROJECT is one in a million, a band that makes it's own music in their own style. A hater usually says "all their songs sound the same!". That's kinda true if you hear only their anisongs (songs made for animes), which is what most people end up doing (not their fault, I know, as you need to search a little deeper to find their other works). Not that I don't like the anisongs, actually they are usually catchier ^^

Therefore, I would like to show you some of their songs from original albums, which are never used as anime themes (their anisongs are always from singles). But before that, just remember that their songs vary between MANY styles, and hearing a song or two isn't enough to know this incredible duo.

An example of their traditional classical songs found in most albums. From the strings-album 'Gothic Opera' (2010)

'Gokushoku Ichidai Onna' from their original album 'Poison' (2009) - An unexpected style of song, now a fan-favorite.

Besides the unique songs, what also impresses me is their visual style. Arika Takarano, the singer, dresses for each single, album or concerts in a whole different way, changing even the hairstyle, color and many other details. Each release has it's own 'theme' and the costumes are a way of making a better presentation of that 'theme'.

Cover of 'Ranse Eroica', a space/videogame-themed single released on July, 2010.

I was thinking about recommending the best albums, singles or songs, but I just can't choose them! ALI PROJECT is such an awesome band and everybody should give them a chance...even a second one~

So what do you think? ^^

PS: Since this is my first post, the image-text-video structure might change in the future until I find one that suits my idea for this blog. :]
