One of the most commented and criticized topics of the idol industry is undoubtedly the transformation seen between pre-debut and recent photos of many artists. Today I'll be analysing those extreme image changes and the questions that always divide opinions. But remember, neither I nor anyone else can surely say what is or what's not "plastic". My examples will be based solely on pictures that are available on the Internet and thus can't be proved to be true or false.

The road to "perfect" beauty - Is it a wrong road to follow?

Hit me if you've never read someone judging an idol by the fact that he/she did plastic surgery. It's really common to see this kind of reactions in the K-Pop fandom, even if it hasn't been officially confirmed. And every time I read a comment like that, it comes to my mind one basic question: Why is someone bothered by the fact that other person got prettier?

Well, some surgeries can end up really bad, but let's focus on our object here. Korea has the best professionals in this area. An idol would never be put under the knife if their agency didn't know exactly what would happen. While it might not be enough for some "ungifted" faces, plastic surgery is already a developed science and it can't be compared to what it once was. So, going back to my first question, why the social paranoid with people who got something done in their face?

It's said that DBSK's angel-face Jaejoong went though surgery for his eyes - Look at him now. Got anything to whine about?

With that in mind, some possible answers start popping up. Basically, the beauty process that the idols may go through is expensive. Not only that, but it requires full dedication and couldn't be done under a "normal life" routine. Therefore, as in most K-Pop polemics, we have the jealousy factor. Netizens probably can't afford having their faces fixed, so they decide to attack who can.

This rage leads to the unfortunate events that we see every day, when every single idol that shows up is already accused of being "plastic", childhood bad photos (that kind of photo that everyone has and everyone hates) are searched and even websites are hacked simply to find ANYTHING that could be a reason to destroy the idol's image. And that's the moment when things are wrongly mixed, because a transformation doesn't mean someone went through plastic surgery.

The famous Big Bang's TOP pictures - the exact same face with just a different weight

When entering the entertainment industry, it's obvious that you need to be at your best. Many famous artists just worked really hard to lose weight and gain muscles. Not to mention their new haircuts, carefully chosen to fit their faces by specialist. Those are changes that make HUGE, I said HUUUUUUUUUUGE differences.

Those transformations, along with plastic surgery, also have a great psychological impact over the ones affected by them. It's extremely important that these singers have good self-esteem, and image is the main point in that matter, not only when you are an idol, but when you're a human being in a society that praises beauty over anything else, which is the basic structure of modern mass culture. These people are under an unimaginable pressure, and being pretty is essential to even think about a successful entertainment career.

See that? He would never have a girlfriend before! How can that be more depressing?
(Thanks to whoever made this awesome picture.)

Argue as much as you want, because in the end it comes back to the primary, obvious but mostly ignored question: "SO WHAT?". If someone's face bothers you, don't look at it. Judge it and you're basically saying that you are prettier, which in most cases I doubt it (no offense). Models and Idols, they are supposed to be an example of the "beauty pattern". What's wrong with the ways used to get there? Their personal success depends on it and no one has the right to punish them. But if you insist in criticizing them, here's a suggestion: Get a life, maybe then you can get the money to fix your face too, Mr. Natural Beauty Only.

"So what?"

2010 was a year overflowing with new groups. So many that some just disappeared, leaving people wondering about what they were doing. On the other hand, groups like miss A or C.N Blue achieved great success, beating even senior artists on weekly music shows.

 C.N Blue - a 2010 artist that doesn't even seem to be a rookie

Unfortunately, these new stars found a big problem after successfully entering the idol world. Many hardcore fans from senior artists created some kind of resistance against the rookies. Claiming that they will never be what the older groups are and constantly making comparisons only to say bad things about the newcomers are the most common attacks.

Even if I try to understand this behavior, I really just can't stand the ridiculous position that some people take. You know, those guys/girls worked really hard to even debut. After that, they still have to shine in their live performances and hope to be acknowledged by the audience. When you are beginning it's not easy to stand out, but they persevere and believe in their dreams of becoming famous or simply of doing what they like (singing, dancing...)

Infinite - a rookie boy group that impressed with the perfect live synchronization

So I ask these particular "senior fans": Why the annoying rejection? If you see the rookies as some kind of dangerous competition, I beg to differ. First of all, they are a healthy competition, because it will eventually make the veterans work harder not to lose their superior posts. Also, the new groups aren't there just thinking "Oh, I'll kick these old people's butts and show who's the best". They have a respectful relationship and want to watch their seniors as an inspiration for a better work.

2PM and miss A - a beautiful representation of senior-rookie friendship

Aside from those career-related points, there's the musical interest. Newcomers, while not always, try to bring freshness to the industry, with possible new trends and addictive tunes. f(x)'s "Nu ABO" is a great example of that as it proposed a "new blood" to the Korean pop music, which I doubt that would be presented by SNSD's or Super Junior's songs. In fact, I see many people saying on forums that they are tired of hearing the same beats on K-Pop, so let's give a chance for these new groups to change this!

f(x) - bringing new blood to the idol industry

I personally think that new groups = new music. And that's what matters, because good music is never enough. Oh, it's true that crappy stuff also appears in the middle of the rookie mess, but there's nothing to worry about it as time itself will send these disgusting songs to the music limbo to rot. Newcomers deserve as much attention as any other group, if not more, due to their extreme hard work. Remember, your "legends" were also a rookie one day and could only grow with the support of true fans.

Last year, we saw hordes of Korean girl groups heading to Japan. Under the influences of the Hallyu Wave, the South Korean cultural expansion, these groups achieved great success most of the times. Some of them, like KARA or SNSD (Shoujo Jidai), even entered the competition against Japan's recent most famous group, AKB48. How were they able to do that in such small time?

First of all, as previously stated, the effects of the spreading interest for Korean culture. The massive Korean idol industry and famous TV dramas were certainly decisive in the attraction of worldwide fans, especially in Japan, which is geographically very close and therefore easily influenced by the Wave.

KARA in Japan - instant success with the famous "Butt Move" from the debut song "Mister"

Add an extreme care for beauty, training and live performances and you have a killer formula against unprepared artists in any country. Remember that Korean idols are usually trained for years inside their agency before even debuting in order to make them fully prepared for the music industry.

On the other hand, you have the common Japanese idol girl groups, which are basically focused on variety shows and that eventually get better by their career experience. When comparing the beginning of these groups to their Korean counterparts, it's scaring obvious to know which one is going to be praised by fans and critics, especially when AKB48 has "millions" of members and you really can't expect every single one of them to be good at singing, dancing, acting, modeling...

AKB48 - Damn, do they expect us to know them all?! @-@

"So Pedro, are you saying that Japan will be dominated by Korean groups now?" Definitely not. Japan's music industry will never fall to that, simply because they aren't idol-based like South Korea these days. And you don't need to go far to see that. Without even considering J-Rock, there's such a diversity in Japanese music that it's hard to know it all. Classical-like singers make huge success, Enka masters are still on the top and the idols, such as Hello!Project groups or Johnny's Arashi, take the number 1 spot simply for appealing to the masses of young Japanese fan girls/boys.

With that in mind, I just think that the idol section of J-Pop is threatened. For 2010 we had mainly Korean girl groups entering the market, but this year it's going to be different. SHINee announced that they are going to debut in Japan in March. Now tell me, is there anyone with a minimal critical mind thinking that people like NYC or KAT-TUN are talent-wise better than the SHINee members? If you do, I will personally send you to a doctor, because you need new ears and eyes. I know, these Japanese boy bands won't decline fast, but if they don't do anything about it, they will be eventually overshadowed by the awesome synchronization, vocals and training of Hallyu artists.

SHINee's first concert in Japan - and they haven't even debuted there yet.

Before anyone goes to the comments section saying that I'm Korean-biased and that I hate Japanese artists, let me say something. You see, I knew J-Pop years before K-pop. I love Arashi, Morning Musume and older AKB48 songs. I even have Arashi's Crazy Moon single! My point here is that their talents is somewhat underdeveloped simply for the fact that they aren't trained like SHINee or KARA members. Therefore, why would Japanese people keep praising something when it's right there in their faces that these "new" groups are currently better?

Also, I reckon that this is the perfect experience for Japan to learn something good. It will be great competition to their industry, and hopefully that will force them to change this disappointing image that idols are getting there with the AKB48 girls appealing only to sexual insinuations in their music videos instead of impressing listeners for the musical quality that could exist. And yes, Korean idols also appeal to sexualized themes sometimes, but at least they prove their talents at the same time with great vocals.

But of course, haters gonna hate, and that why some stubborn Japanese people keep messing around with Korean artists' images in order to try to prevent them from successfully entering the market. Rumors about idols using their good looks to get good contracts spreaded quickly through the internet.

A manga page accusing Korean girl groups of using their bodies to be successful

Instead of creating a conflict between the music industries, people should support their country's artists on their expansion. Cultural exchange is good for both sides as it improves the qualities of a society, increasing their complexity. In times of economic crisis, the unison of these two huge music cultures is not only a way to get money, but also to open the minds of the population to a more globalized thinking.

It's only a matter of time before Japanese groups also head to South Korea and this hate nowadays will only make things more difficult, since Koreans will also like to have their "revenge" and will eventually criticize the J-Pop essence. Listening to good music is never enough, so why try to repel it only because it's not of your nationality? As always, respect is one of the most important keys to a healthy cultural process and now is the right moment to improve that quality.

AKB48 with KARA - No need to bash, your idols are friends :)

Once again it's time to be mean. But I'm going to say something before that. If you like f(x)'s Amber, you have two choices: read and defend your bias in the comments or stay away from this post, unless you just want to get angry at me. Remember that this is MY view on all this mess and you don't have to agree with me. Respect before mindless hating.

Amber - La Cha Ta's look

Since the group's debut with the song "La Cha Ta" in 2009, hordes of fangirls have been attracted by the rapper Amber. Well, that was expected considering the tomboy-ish look. Unfortunately, that brought a lot of unnecessary things with it.

First of all, the excessive love. Amber was immediately considered the member with greater popularity, winning all polls on forums (before Victoria's WGM, of course) and with a bunch of spazzing fangirls saying how gorgeous she was and that they would even like to "marry her" due to her boyish looks. Oh really?

Don't forget about the overrated abilities. Her rapping capacities are subpar. KARA's Nicole or even minor boy band rappers can kick her ass in a rap battle. Oh, and yes, I will compare her with boy band rappers since she is obviously famous because of her looks, not due to her "musical talents". Also, I recently observed in f(x)'s music video after I read about it in a forum, and Amber's dancing is the worst in the group, making everything clumsily. Yeah take that, Sulli haters. But don't worry dear reader, as it seems that S.M. Entertainment noticed that too!

Amber on NU ABO's photoshooting

During NU ABO's promotions, Amber hurt her ankle and had to stop performing in order to rest. After a while, she even ended up going to the USA to "rest" with her family and recover in a better way. Really? So why did she take photos with famous choreographers there? And I don't mean any famous choreographer, but YG's Shaun Evaristo, who trains South Korean artists such as Big Bang. And surprise, YG's groups are usually focused in rapping, so maybe there's more than choreography involved.

You see where I want to get with this little explanation? Amber took SIX MONTHS to "recover" from an ankle injury and show up at SHINee's concert in December, plus 3 months until f(x) expected comeback in March.
My theory is that she was/is training, or you could say "Finally learning how to dance, rap, sing whatever". There's nothing more hyped in this world than Amber's return after her disappearance. SM knows that and they have to make this comeback the bomb or there's little chance that f(x) is going to survive the girl group war. What would be better for success than a skillful Amber?
 Amber-less f(x).
The rapper's absence was also interesting for the rest of the group, as it gave them an opportunity to shine. Best example? Koala. Having their own TV show, without Amber, where they travel together, have fun and most importantly, entertain the viewers with unique personalities and talents was great. Let's not forget about Victoria's "We Got Married" show. She's definitely the most famous member now, but would she be able to do that if Amber was also doing stuff around? We will never know, although I personally think it would be harder to gather such attention in other conditions.

With the girls' comeback getting closer and closer, it's only a matter of time before we know what SM planned all this time. It's going to be VERY interesting, despite the fact that I sense an Amber overload in the new album. Still, everyone is waiting for answers on this case and I just wanted to share my thoughts. Yes, Amber is my least favorite member but I respect her as part of my nÂș1 girl group.
Do you believe she was just recovering all this time? Can you guess what's going to happen for their comeback? Please tell me on the comment section below ^^

First of all, sorry for not posting this yesterday. It is such a complicated matter that I decided to make a bigger research on the facts and ended up not finishing the post on time... Well, here it is!

K-Pop fans must have noticed that this week has been full of hatred and fuzz over some people's tweets. In fact, it's another part of the DBSK/TVXQ! Epic that has dominated netizens and korean news sites for almost a year now.

Junsu, Yoochun and Jaejoong // Yunho and Changmin (credits to whoever made this photo)

I won't go over all the problems since the lawsuit as this post is dedicated to more recent events, but for those who don't know anything about this, a little explanation:

Last year, three members of the almighty, super popular boy group DBSK (also written as TVXQ! or Tohoshinki in Japan) filed a lawsuit against their agency, S.M. Entertainment. The reason for this was that they considered they were under a slave-contract and wanted to make a new, fair one. After halting the group's activities and not being able to reach an agreement, SME filed a lawsuit against the 3 members.

Many thing happened since that time, but what matters most in this very brief explanation is that the remaining two members, Yunho and Changmin, continued the group even with the same name and came back this week with a new album, while the three other members formed JYJ and are currently expanding to America as well as preparing a korean album, waiting for more results on the lawsuit.

DBSK(Yunho and Changmin)'s album "Keep Your Head Down"
JYJ's album "The Beginning"

While JYJ's first album really disappointed fans for Kanye West's exaggerated presence on the songs and lack of the boys' beautiful voices, the "New DBSK" album "Keep Your Head Down" was received with much success. Well, that's not really a problem to discuss, right? I mean, sometimes artists get it wrong, sometimes they make hits. Where is the polemic?

It all started with the "Thank to" section of KYHD. In this part of the album, member Yunho expressed his gratitude to SME's CEO, Lee Soo Man. It didn't take long until Junsu from JYJ tweeted about it, revealing his deep thoughts. Junsu couldn't accept that his ex-bandmate was thanking the man that was their "enemy" and that eventually caused the separation. The full translated tweets (credits to allkpop.com):

“Until now, I kept believing that it wasn’t true, I believed that (it) was the enemy of all five of us, but I guess it wasn’t really the enemy of all. To see that (they) expressed their gratitude to something I thought was both our enemies.. I guess a lot of things happened in the time we weren’t together. This is so tiring.”

“I keep wanting to think, hear, and see only good things, but it’s very hard to do that today. Even though we’ve been apart, you know that wasn’t right, hyung. We thought the same. Why are you being like this.”

It is certainly interesting to read the tweet and think about all the implications. While it shows how tiring the sepation experience has been for the members (for both sides), it also demonstrates where things are heading. Many people are arguing about those statements and it's funny to see how blind a person can get when defending their favorite band or member.

Just to get started on my arguments, Twitter is a public space and Junsu should never have posted such things on it. If you're having a nervous breakdown, write about it on a diary, don't make a tweet, especially when you are a celebrity and a bunch of stalkers watch you on the internet 24/7. I don't know if thought about it, but it was obvious that it would cause hell on forums and even among celebrities. It already did.

After only a day or two, it seemed as all artists from SMEnt decided to write about the controversies. BoA, the choreographer Sim Jaewon, SuJu's Shindong and Sungmin and later TRAX's Jungmo all expressed their thoughts, defending Yunho and saying that Junsu is "ungrateful". Of course, these artists write about Junsu's rudeness, but in the end one question remains in my head: why did they even get in the middle of this mess?

With all the confusion, some people say that SM is forcing them to write the tweets, fuelling the hate against JYJ and looking for a way to gain more support for DBSK's comeback, considering that many fans are boycotting the album and even talking about separating the fanclub. Chances of separating the world's biggest fanclub are slim, but it is certainly enough to scare SMent. Still, I don't believe this rumour is true as the statements are just making the idols look bad and I'm sure that LSM is smarter than this.

Le Soo Man - look at his face, he is obviously smarter than this!

It has been only two days since Junsu's emotional attack and it's already too much. The fanwars seem to be infinite since each person defends one group. Facts get distorted every time they're mentioned. It also doesn't help when more idols tweet about it. It's just such a useless fight, IT WON'T TAKE JYJ OR DBSK ANYWHERE.

In the end, this idol showdown is just ridiculous. Everyone is getting hurt, especially the fans. And I say, there's nothing more important than the fans. You can be born talented, you can have the money from your company, you can have fair contracts or slave-contracts, but you don't get famous without fans. Artists should NEVER forget that. I don't know if it's true, but I heard that a girl suicided this week because of the controversies. I know, if she did that because of an idol group she obviously had some problems, but still, we all know some fangirls can get really crazy, so why give them more reasons to do so?

I just hope that this Twitter hell ends soon and that JYJ's album can be released without any problems. They chose their paths and that's what matters! If they're are going to reunite one day, let it be decided by the 5 members and not by other people. For now, let's calm down and stop raging on forums when we don't even know what's true or false. Support BOTH groups if you liked old DBSK and there won't be a problem, at least not one that involves fans.

Good Ol' DBSK - If you liked them, keep supporting!

Well, this is it for now. If you want to read the translated tweets from the other artists, here are the links (once again, thanks to allkpop.com):

For many desperate fangirls and angry fanboys, 2010 will be forever remembered as the year when Jonghyun (member from boy band SHINee) and Shin Se Kyung (actress/model) revealed that they were seeing each other.

Jonghyun (20)

Shin Se Kyung (20)

While this doesn't seem too shocking or even shocking at all, considering they're part of the entertainment industry, you must understand that the 'idol world', in this case Jonghyun's world, has rarely allowed open relationships such as this one. And there are many reasons for that.

First of all, the training. It's oddly common nowadays to see idols fainting while on stage due to excessive stress and lack of sleep. In that situation, how would they be able to maintain a healthy relationship? In addition to that, the fans. Yes, the fans. The agencies know that many fans would stop supporting the groups if their bias (they're favorite member) started to date someone that was not them. Crazy, I know, but it's true. I'll get to that point in this post when it's more relevant.

Therefore, it's really intriguing to watch the development of this case since it reveals much about the actual influence of the idols inside the labels or over society. Even if it's just an opinion, I'd like to share an interesting point of view on this matter with you.

The first picture(s)

Old rumors already talked about SHINee's influence inside SM Entertainment. It's hard to believe that a fairly new group would have such power over one of the biggest companies of South Korea. But would SM let any artist from any other active group openly date like they did with Jonghyun? Not only that, but would they also protect him/her like they did this time? I don't think so. Well, you might say that SNSD is much more powerful. I reckon you're right, but in my view, the company wouldn't take the risk when the girls are having their golden years. Remember, SHINee has a lot of fangirls, but SNSD has the SONEs, gathering boys and girls, and I wouldn't like to mess with them.

Concerning Shin Se Kyung, she is probably the biggest victim in all this, despite her being able to date an incredibly famous boy band member. After all, it didn't take a day until multiple hating-sites had been opened by her new anti-fans. Her personal accounts also had to be close. Still, we can't deny that in the end it all helped boosting her popularity. Give her all the CMs already lol!

If I had to give a surprise prize for anyone, it would definitely be to the members of the SHINee official fanclub, the Shawols. While their first reactions were mixed and fights happened on many internet forums, it didn't take long for them to realize what they had to do. Nothing could be more important as members of the official fanclub than to support Jonghyun no matter what. And I'm glad they took that seriously, even if I was really mad at Jonghyun's apologize at a music show. I mean, why is he saying sorry to the fans and not the opposite? But then I noticed that it was only a matter of politeness and it's just the Korean way of life (in the most positive way).

Peace at last!

After following all news about it, it seems that things are calmer now. Despite all the deep analysis I made, I just hope that they can see each other whenever they want without anyone annoying them. Even with all the hard training and busy schedules, maybe this was a huge step in the right direction. Maybe one day more idols can share happy moments with the person they love, right?

For Jonghyun, just don't let all that happiness affect you're training and talent, because I'm sure fans will notice it. Oh, I think that wasn't very supportive...sorry lol. But really, just take care of yourself and your girlfriend! For Shin Se Kyung, since you don't have to slave-train, how about making a TV commercial with your boyfriend? That would be the final strike on the remaining crazy fans!

Now for you, reader, I hope it was at least an interesting reading. If you have anything to add or to argue, just take your time and make a (huge) comment below. The 'Uncovering' corner will be back next week with more huge texts~ ^^
